How to Prevent Water Leakage: A Guide to Terrace Waterproofing

Protecting Your Home from the Monsoons

In coastal cities like Mumbai, heavy rains are a given. If your building's terrace isn't adequately protected, water will eventually seep through the slab, causing dampness, peeling paint, and worst of all, rusting of the internal steel reinforcement (TMT bars).

The Consequences of Ignoring Waterproofing

Water seepage doesn't just ruin the aesthetic appeal of your beautiful POP false ceilings; it fundamentally compromises the strength of your roof. Once the steel rebars inside the concrete start rusting, they expand and cause the concrete to crack—a phenomenon known as 'spalling'.

Types of Terrace Waterproofing

  • Brickbat Coba: A traditional Indian method involving laying broken bricks over the slab to provide a slope, followed by waterproof cement mortar. It provides excellent thermal insulation as well.
  • Liquid Waterproofing Membrane: A modern, highly effective method where specialized polymer-based liquid coatings are applied with a roller or brush. When dry, it forms a thick, rubber-like elastomeric layer.
  • Bituminous Membrane: Often used for large commercial flat roofs, these are heavy-duty tar-based sheets rolled onto the surface using a blowtorch.

Why You Need Professional Civil Contractors

Waterproofing is not a DIY job. Improper surface preparation, incorrect slopes, or failure to seal parapet wall joints will render the chemical useless. At AMS Civil Construction, we integrate waterproofing right into our core civil and masonry work.
