Why Plastering is the Backbone of Your Walls

When we look at a beautifully painted room, we rarely think about the layers beneath the paint. However, the true strength and smoothness of any wall depend entirely on the plaster work executed by your civil contractor.

What is Plastering?

Plastering is the process of covering rough walls and uneven surfaces in the construction of houses and other structures with a plastic material, called plaster, which is a mixture of cement, sand, and water.

Functions of Good Plaster Work

  • Protection: External plaster acts as a protective shield for the brickwork against rain, wind, and industrial gases.
  • Aesthetics: It provides a smooth, leveled surface that is necessary for applying putty and high-quality paint.
  • Concealment: It hides poor workmanship in masonry and conceals electrical conduits and plumbing pipes.

Why Do Cracks Appear in Plaster?

The most common complaints from homeowners are hairline cracks in the plaster. This usually happens due to:

  1. Incorrect ratio of cement to sand.
  2. Improper mixing of the mortar.
  3. Lack of Curing: Cement requires water to gain strength. If the plastered wall is not sprayed with water (cured) for at least 7-10 days, it will dry too fast and crack.
