Best Flooring Options for Indian Homes: Vitrified Tiles vs Marble

Flooring sets the foundation for your home's entire aesthetic. In India, the debate almost always boils down to two heavyweights: Vitrified Tiles and Natural Marble. Which one should you choose for your Mumbai home?

1. Vitrified Tiles: The Practical Choice

Vitrified tiles are ceramic tiles with very low porosity, making them stain and water-resistant. Today, large-format GVT (Glazed Vitrified Tiles) measuring 4x8 feet closely mimic real marble.

Pros: Zero maintenance, stain-resistant, highly durable, fast installation, and endless design patterns.

Cons: Cannot be re-polished. Once the top glaze scratches or wears off (after 10-15 years), they must be replaced. Grout lines are visible.

Cost: ₹50 to ₹150 per sq. ft. (Material) + ₹35 labor.

2. Italian Marble: The Luxury Statement

Nothing beats the seamless, mirror-like finish of natural Italian marble like Statuario, Diana, or Perlato.

Pros: Exquisite luxury, seamless joints, increases property value, and can be re-polished multiple times to look brand new even after 30 years.

Cons: Highly porous (absorbs lemon/wine stains if not sealed properly), prone to cracking during installation, requires regular repolishing every few years.

Cost: ₹300 to ₹1500+ per sq. ft. (Material) + ₹150 labor & polishing.

3. Indian Granite

Best for kitchens, staircases, and heavy-traffic areas. It is indestructible and highly stain-resistant, though it lacks the bright, airy feel of light marble.

4. Wooden Flooring (Laminate)

Perfect for bedrooms to give a warm, cozy feel. However, avoid it in living rooms in Mumbai due to high humidity and termite risks. Cost: ₹80 - ₹150 per sq. ft.
