Minimalist Interior Design: A Complete Civil Guide
The Secret to True Minimalism
Minimalism isn't just about having fewer furniture pieces. True minimalist interior design relies heavily on the underlying civil work. The architecture itself must be clean, seamless, and perfectly aligned.
1. Shadow Grooves Instead of Skirting
Traditional protruding wooden or tile skirting breaks the visual flow of a wall. Minimalist spaces often employ 'shadow grooves' (recessed skirting), where the wall appears to float slightly above the floor. This requires precise masonry and plastering.
2. Flush Doors and Concealed Hinges
Door frames (chaukhats) that protrude are eliminated in modern minimal design. Doors are installed perfectly flush with the wall, utilizing concealed hinges and magnetic locks, making them almost invisible when closed.
3. Microtopping and Concrete Finishes
Instead of busy tile patterns, minimalists favor seamless floors. Microtopping—a polymer-modified cementitious coating—provides a continuous, joint-free surface that looks like raw, polished concrete.
4. Concealed Lighting and AC Vents
Visible fixtures are kept to an absolute minimum. Linear slot diffusers for air conditioning and recessed architectural lighting are planned meticulously during the false ceiling civil work.
